Veronica Heringer-Ames by Lili Vieira de Carvalho

I was born Veronica Heringer Guimaraes in a beautiful city called Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. My mom is a nurse who has been working in the same hospital for 35 years. My dad is the stereotyped carioca who makes his living as a lawyer. I was bred to be an attorney by my father, but poetry and my love for writing took me to PUC-Rio’s Communications’ school in 2001.

I will always remember those four years as the best years of my life. Running from  one classroom to another, balancing in my hands some big thoughts, I met people who made me who I am today. Also, for four amazing years, I learned to write and read! Before Communications’ school I was a functional reader and non-sense writer!

I started my professional career at Globosat Channels. First, I worked for 10 months as a Media Analyst (intern) at Telecine Network. Then, I moved to Globosat Premiere Channels as a Marketing Assistant (intern). My first full-time paid job was as a TV Programmer in the same Globosat Premiere Channels and for two interesting years I learned how to manage and sell TV!

In October 2006, I decided to travel and discover the world. However, 120 days later I got married and became Veronica Heringer-Ames. I had to get rid off “Guimaraes” because it’s a last name that can’t be said by Canadians. Also, my travel around the world got delayed due Immigration Canada and Citizenship paperwork.

I currently work at ISSofBC Mentoring Connections program as a Marketing and Mentoring Outreach Consultant and I love what I do for a living. My main role is to connect with Vancouver-based professionals and offer to them the opportunity to act as career mentor for a skilled immigrant. I have been with the program since it started on July 2008 and have seen how a mentor’s advice can change lives and careers.

I hope you enjoy this little book!

Take care,

Veronica Heringer-Ames

My Little World

Madame Heringer is not a character who is interesting or fantastic. I don't even remember when I decided to call myself Madame, but I assure you that I am not related to Madame Cleo's nor do I run a spicy business. I just think that it's a little bit classy and French!

Yes, I know... I am Brazilian, but since I moved to Vancouver I've been asked if I am Quebecois, Mexican and even Russian! Go figure... I guess my accent is in constant flux.

Before I forget, we Brazilians speak Portuguese. The Catholic Church did a great job teaching the language to Brazilian first nations since the 16th century. The largest Latin American country speaks only Portuguese although we can understand Spanish!
