I'm Pursuing a Masters Degree in Canada!

Yes, I am working on my 3.0 version. This upgrade comes with different letters after my name and has its release scheduled for Fall 2012 :) As nice as it sounds, let me tell you, going back to school is very hard. Going from a professional to an academic mindset is no easy task. It felt like I was reinventing myself at the beginning, trying really hard to make sense of theories that I left behind at PUC-Rio’s pilotis. However, with time, thoughts and ideologies go back to where they were supposed to be. In fact, they were always there…

As you might know, this is not the first time back to university since I moved to Canada. I’ve always taken post secondary courses here and there. This time has been exceptionally exciting and rewarding though. A masters program is demanding, but it gives me the opportunity to develop research in what really interests me (new media, broadcasting television and audiences).

The only pitfall of this journey are my own expectations. I don’t remember myself as a big nerd, but apparently, I am. I get all worried about my grades and sometimes just forget to have fun. It’s a shame but it’s getting better! And luckily, when I am close to losing my cool, my wonderful classmates always come up with something that makes me laugh really hard. Apparently, the the last weeks of the Fall semester have been extremely inspiring to us. The latest is the #MPMemes!

What about you? Are you back to school working on reinventing yourself? Are you enjoying the experience?

Madame H. I can SO relate! I also moved to another country (from Canada to South Africa) and just finished a year of full-time distance learning to reinvent myself and make over my life. At 40, I found studying to be very tough – I am a total nerd, but my brain doesn’t work the way it used to, so I was very easily distracted even though I loved the subject matter. Now I am starting my own business in a new country with a new qualification and am pretty damn proud of myself :-) (but don’t look at my website yet, it’s still mid-construction!)

Anyhow, I’m terribly proud of you too, and I cannot wait to see what lies in front of you! I’m posting your article on my company Facebook wall as an inspiration for my potential clients who want to immigrate to Canada. Yours is a success story of note, and it makes me really excited about being an immigration consultant and helping people reinvent themselves and craft amazing new lives for themselves in Canada.

      Hi D,

Oh, girl! Thank you! Canada misses you so much…

Yes, it’s super hard to switch from a professional to an academic brain. We go from reacting to things to actually thinking about what we want to say, and that’s completely different. My experience is making me want to move forward and go for the PhD program… I am still debating the idea, but I can see myself as a professor in the future. Weird, eh?!?

You still the best English tutor that I ever had and I am sure you’ll be very successful as an immigrant consultant. ;)

      xoxo,
      VH

V, you would be a terrific professor – I wish my profs had been more like you, that’s for sure :-) Reading about you doing your Master’s has also got me thinking about doing mine. I think my father was right; I will be a student forever!

Keep us posted with everthing and best of luck.
