Brazil is currently a war zone after Forbes and Revista Época, the latter being the magazine of highest circulation in my home country, have published articles defining pop singer Michel Teló as a Brazilian cultural icon. The Brazilian publication apparently went even farther by defining Mr. Teló’s work as the music that translates and unites the cultural values of all Brazilian social classes. I didn’t have a chance to actually read the original article published by Revista Época, but judging by the Forbes’ article Mr. Teló’s biggest achievement was to become a worldwide meme while managing to profit from it. However, my two cents are not related to his success. I am more concerned about the cultural values of the sixth largest economy of the world. Honestly, when a song that makes man grabbing women at nightclubs acceptable becomes what defines my culture, things are not going in the right direction.

I am not here to judge the musical quality of Mr. Teló’s work. That’s a very subjective matter and I really don’t care if Brazilians think that what he sings is fun. However, once it is endorsed by the media, I believe that we have a problem. In the past year, I spent the majority of my time discussing women’s representation in the media and the real message behind the message. Mr. Teló’s songs are clearly targeted to teenagers or young adults interested in casual sex and having fun. They will forget about him as soon as their pimples disappear, no doubt about that! My problem is that when you make acceptable ideas such as in the widespread “Ai se eu te pego” song, in which he tells a girl at a nightclub that she makes him horny and poor her if he was to grab her, you endorse sexual harassement and create a generation of repressed women and stupid men.

Mr. Teló’s work has reached international audiences through social media and unfortunately, also came to consolidate the idea that sex (or our sexual appeal) is the only cultural characteristic that Brazilians have to share with the world. Through his songs, Brazilian women are portrayed as beautiful, hot, but subservient and constantly waiting for a man to tell us about our desires and our role in the world. I know I’ve been living in Canada for a while now, but I guarantee that my culture is richer that any magazine will try to describe to you. As Canadians are not just about hockey and Maple Syrup, so Brazilians women are not powerless and dumb. My homecountry invented the Bossa Nova. The Tropicália was one of the most impressive cultural movements of our recent cultural history with impact on music, visual and performing arts. The cultural production has always been shared by men and women, which allowed young artists throughout the last decades to aspire to become a Clarice Lispector or Mario Quintana, to mention two of Brazil’s most admired writers.

So, if you ever listen to Mr. Teló song, please turn off the radio and download a Maria Rita, Elis Regina, Ivete Sangalo or Bebel Gilberto’s song from iTunes. I guarantee that you’ll be amazed by how intense and poetic the Brazilian soul is.

(First self-portrait of the project. Clearly pissed off at Michel Teló, Forbes and Revista Época)

Pronto, partindo desse pressuposto, eu posso fazer inveja no fã-clube brasileiro!

Teve Kid A com Everything in its Right Place e 2+2 de Hail to the Thief e, OK Computer com Karma Police, No Surprises e Paranoid Android. Música esta perfeita para embalar os isqueiros que não acenderam enquanto todo mundo cantava “rain down… rain down… come on rain down on me”!
