Day #4: 10 years ago, If anyone told me that I would be who I am today, I wouldn’t believe it. The 2o-year-old Veronica Heringer had big dreams and was really good at faking her self-confidence while she was battling all sorts of fears in her heart. At that time, I dreamt of having a boyfriend who would walk me into a jewelry store and say “pick your ring,“ exactly like I’ve seen in a super cheezy movie. I had crazy ideas that I would find someone who would care for me and support my dreams, live life to the fullest and have a great sense of humour. However, since the facts where very different from my dreams in 2002, I was determine to stay single and get an artificial insemination at 28.

Time didn’t only made me more mature and self-confident, but also prepared me to understand what true love really means. Life was weird when I meet Mr. Ames five years ago. I was living in a foreign country, surrounded by new friends but completely unaware of who I was. I didn’t think of myself as a beautiful neither attractive woman. I knew I was smart and different from most people, but I attempted to be like everybody else. The teenage insecurities were still there while I was trying to figure out what being an adult really meant.

My Valentine made all my dreams come true in the last five years. Mr. Ames saw in me qualities that I didn’t know were there. He always believed that I could do whatever I wanted even when that meant starting all over again. He is my partner in crime and my best friend. He cooks to celebrate our milestones and serves good wine when life is a bit harder than usual. He doesn’t call me crazy when I think that moving across Canada is easy, but is a jerk when he sees that I am pretending to be less than I really am. Mr. Ames is definitely the great man behind the great woman that I became…

Happy Valentine’s Day, Baby!

Celebrating Valentine’s Day in February is a little bit strange for me. In Brazil, Valentine’s Day (Dia dos Namorados) is celebrated every year on June 12th. We do exactly the same things that Canadians do: we wake up our significant other with a long kiss, go for dinner with him/her and order a bottle of good wine, and exchange gifts.

On my first Valentine’s Day in Canada, Mr. Ames took me to a jewerly store and ask me to choose my engagement ring. Mr. Ames has a really black sense of humour and I seriously thought that it was a really bad joke at the time, so on my first Valentine’s Day in Canada I also had my first fight with my forever valentine. But once he convinced me that it was for real, we had fun (I am supposing he had) picking out my engagement ring.

Mr. Ames and I got married 11 days later. I know, it was a really long engagement, we were really cautious before signing the papers.

It’s Valentine’s Day! Get out there and make this day special for your valentine! If he/she is the one, let him/her know about it! Life is too short to question your heart!
