The Wellness Show Giveaway

Yesterday, Mr. Ames picked up a wonderful bag of goodies from our UPS box. The sender? The Wellness Show and its sponsors.

I don’t know about you, but since January 1st I have been trying to stick with my new year’s resolution of becoming a healthier person.I must confess that it isn’t going as planned, but I am slowly catching up. Attending this year’s Wellness Show sounds like a convenient incentive and probably will equip me with more tools to fight my cravings and laziness.

The 18th edition of The Wellness show will happen from Friday, April 30th, through to Sunday, May 2nd at the Vancouver Convention Centre. General admission tickets are $12.50, seniors and students are $10, children 6-15 are $5, and children 5 and under are free.

You might be asking yourself why I am telling you all that, right? Well… in order to promote MadameHeringer.com’s first giveaway, I am getting myself into a lot of trouble!  I entered the Mom’s Muffin Category of the Healthy Baking Contest. I need to deliver 4 baked muffins inspired by my Mom’s recipes on the first day of The Wellness Show. Since Brazilian moms don’t bake muffins (at least my mom doesn’t) and heathy for me means a lot of chocolate, I don’t even know where I should begin.

If you’re as concerned about my decision as I am and want to help, or even if you only want a chance to win this amazing bag full of goodies, you should leave a comment with an suggestion for my muffin’s recipe or a baking tip for me. I’ll draw the winner on Monday, April 26th at 2pm.

The Wellness Show giveaway bag that you have a chance to win includes:

- 2 complimentary tickets for The Wellness Show

- 1 Light Activewear yoga tank top ($46 retail price)

- 5 Power Plates workouts and 5 infrared sauna sessions at Powervibe

- 1 Infofit personal training session

- 1 Western Sage Creamed Cool Mint Honey

- 1 Western Sage Creamed Cinnamon Honey

- 1 Western Sage Bee Magic Honey

- 1 Tuscan Farm Gardens Lavender Body Lotion

- 1 Prana Chia Oil bottle

- 1 GoldSeal Wild Salmon Oil Dietary Supplement

- 1 BCDHA kit

- 1 Kitchen Basics Chicken Cooking Stock

- 1 Allera’s Immune Extra Dietary Supplement

- 1 Nelli’s all-natural Laundry Soda package

and much more!

Which ingredients should I use? What can’t I forget to add to my recipe? Leave a comment for a chance to win.

Update: In a really old fashion style, I numbered 15 post-its and asked my friend and co-worker Ana Marie to pick a number.  Ironically, #13 is FMC’s lucky number and he/she is the first MadameHeringer.com’s online contest winner! Congrats! You have until tomorrow by noon to answer to my email.

Thanks everybody for sharing your baking knowledge with me!

Rebecca Bollwitt’s Book Signing for ‘Blogging to Drive Business’

Meeting Rebecca Bollwitt felt exactly like how Paula Mazulquim described the day that she met George Stroumboulopoulos in her blog. Sometimes, it’s completely impossible to make sense (or even be normal) when meeting someone who you really respect and admire for the first time. I believe that Paula did it better than I did last Saturday.

Rebecca is a huge inspiration to me to keep blogging and writing. In this video, you’ll see how much she believes in social media and citizen journalism’s potential. I am learning a lot about blogging through ‘Blogging to Drive Business’, which will have a review here some time soon.

What about you? Who has been your inspiration? Who would you like to be when you grow up?

P.S.: I completely forgot to get my miss604 pin…

Social Networks bring over 300 Vancouverites to Diane Farris Gallery

Social Networks bring over 300 Vancouverites to Diane Farris Gallery

For those who don’t believe that social media is changing the way people interact and consume art, 300 people attended the Twitter/Art + Social Media’s opening reception at Diane Farris Gallery last Thursday to prove them wrong. In an informal setting, connected Vancouverites enjoyed the art over a beer while sharing how they discovered the exhibit on facebook or through a tweet, confirming that art is becoming more and more connected and accessible on a global scale.

Diane Farris Gallery has a history of forward thinking. The gallery launched its first website in 1996 when less than 1% of the world’s population had access to the internet, so when Mia Johnson presented the original idea for Twitter/Art + Social Media, it was a done deal. According to the exhibit’s curator, Lili Vieira de Carvalho, Diane Farris herself has always been interested in the possibilities of the internet and how online communities can support artists.

“If you are an artist who is sharing your process or artwork online, you are building an audience. You can also find people who care about the same issues as you and want be part of your creative process,” added Vieira de Carvalho.

Peter Combe, Iran’s Ahmadinejad Prepares for Avatar Premier, 2010.

The juried exhibit selected works from over 40 artists who use social media as an inspiration, a tool to connect with their audience, and to promote their work. However, Twitter/Art + Social Media is not only an art exhibit, it also intends to give back to the community through a series of free events:
On April 13th at 4:00pm, publicist Rebecca Coleman and photographer Kris Krug will facilitate a ‘Social Media for Visual Artists’ workshop.

On the 17th, Diane Farris Gallery will host an art and social media panel with the Twitter/Art + Social Media selection committee: Dr. Maria Lantin, from Emily Carr; Hank Bull, Executive Director of Centre A; Kris Krug, Vancouver-based photographer and Vancouver Film School professor; and Lili Vieira de Carvalho, Associate Director of Diane Farris Gallery.

On the 27th, the 8th edition of Draw by Night – A Drawing Party will take place at Diane Farris Gallery.

Please contact Diane Farris Gallery at (604) 737-2629 or email facebook@dianefarrisgallery.com to register for these events. Seats are limited.

Twitter/Art + Social Media exhibit is open Tuesday – Friday from 10am to 5:30pm and Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Diane Farris Gallery is located at 1590 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC.

Identity_theft

Identity Theft: What to Do When Someone Else Owns Your Name

Identity_theft

It’s hard to believe, but yes, I came all the way from Brazil to have my identity stolen in Canada. After two months of dealing with the Vancouver Police Department, credit reporting agencies, banks, cell phone providers and credit card companies, I can proudly say that my name is clean again and I am much smarter when it comes to protecting my identity.

First Signs

I first suspected that someone else was taking advantage of my credit reputation in August 2009 when Mr. Ames received his tax return but my cheque didn’t arrive in our mailbox. Since it was the first time that I was filing my taxes as a permanent resident in Canada, I thought the delay could be explained by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) standard procedures. I contacted CRA later in August and they informed me that my tax return had been sent to my previous address, but they would send me a claim form to be filled out and returned to them.

The form arrived in September and as instructed, I filled it out and returned it to the CRA. Since I didn’t receive any answer, I decide to call the CRA again and inquire about the replacement cheque. It turned out that my first cheque had been cashed and because of that I had to fill out another CRA form in front of a notary public stating that I had neither cashed nor endorsed the first cheque. The form arrived in late September and I received the second cheque in December. Problem solved, right? Wrong!

The people who had the guts to cash my cheque received my notice of assessment with it that included my full social insurance number (SIN). One of the first things that I tell to all newcomers that I meet is to never carry their SIN cards with them because if they lose it anyone can use their name to acquire credit. Ironically, that was exactly what happened to me! Apparently, when the fake Veronica cashed my cheque she presented a fake SIN card and a driver’s license with my name. She also went to Fido and bought three cell phones. Luckily, my credit report is new and she didn’t have the opportunity to steal any more money or services.

What should you do next?

Since I am a newcomer, I thought that my credit card applications were being denied because of  a lack of credit history and didn’t bother to check what my credit score was. I only discovered that my name was being used by someone else when the company that cashed the first cheque called me in January asking for the money. Since I hadn’t ever been to any of their stores, I realized that something was wrong.

I rushed to the internet and discovered that I should contact the police and report what happened. If you’re going through the same thing, the Vancouver Police Department’s non-emergency phone number is (604) 717-3321. The officers who assisted me with the police report were really helpful. They knocked on our door 10 minutes after I hung up the phone and after they left, I had the incident number that would help me clear my  name.

The next step was to contact Equifax and TransUnion. I had the most traumatic experiences with both agencies and didn’t encounter any helpful soul working in their call centres. The standard script was “You need to send us a letter addressed to our fraud department explaining what happened along with two pieces of photo ID.” In my case, things were extra painful because both Equifax and TransUnion had changed my date of birth (something that I will never understand) and my home address. According to both services they “update” your information according to what the credit providers report to them. In my world, that would raise a flag!

Then, I started calling all the services that had inquired about my credit: Dell Financial Services, Fido and Telus. Once again, I was surprised to see that neither Fido/Rogers nor Dell Financial Services have a fraud strategy in place. If they have, they haven’t informed their call centre staff about it! Telus was super helpful and told me that according to the last log of the agent who opened the file using my SIN number, Telus required the fake Veronica to go to a Telus store and present two pieces of ID in order to open an account with them. Lots of points to Telus!

I was only able to remove the Dell Financial Services and Fido/Rogers inquiries from my credit report through Equifax and TransUnion. Once they decided that I was myself, I spent a great deal of time on the phone telling Equifax and TransUnion what was a fraudulent activity and what was not. Fido/Rogers called me in February trying to get my correct information, but I refused to share any information with them for two reasons: I am not their client and I was afraid that they would transfer the fake Veronica‘s debt to me. I informed Fido/Rogers that they should call the VPD and inquire about my case, which I doubt they did.

What Did I Learn?

After three months living this nightmare, I learned a lot about the Canadian bank system and I was really surprised to realize how fragile it is. However, there is a lot that you can do to avoid what happened to me. Here are some the top examples:

- Always keep your mailing address up to date with the CRA, your bank and other services that you buy on a regular basis;

- Don’t assume that your mailing address will change on CRA’s records if you file your taxes online. You need to actually call the CRA in order to change your mailing address, otherwise they will send your tax return with your notice of assessment to your previous address;

- Set up extra passwords with your bank and services that you deal with on a regular basis;

- Check your credit every six months. If you identify any strange activity under your name, contact both Equifax and TransUnion immediately.

If you’ve been a victim of identity theft in Canada, you can start by contacting the police. They will be able to help you with the next steps to get your name back!

St. Patrick’s Day: Vancouver Fundraiser

St. Patrick’s Day: Vancouver Fundraiser

St. Patrick’s Parade – Vancouver, March 15th, 2008 (via Vida Portatil

It’s St. Patrick’s day, time to grab a huge jug filled with green beer and have fun! I am not Irish, but it’s impossible to resist the Irish carnival that happens on St. Patrick’s day.

Inspired by the Irish life style, my coworker Romanda Simpson and her friends Amanda and Suzie Q are hosting a St. Patrick’s Comedy Night Fundraiser tonight at Lafflines (New Westminster – right beside Columbia Skytrain station). Tickets are only $10.oo and the money will be used to fund their participation in the 2010 Mongol Rally edition. Since I met Romanda in 2008, she has been talking about the day that she will leave from London, England to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in a 1L car. Her team 3 blondes and a beater is currently raising money to register in the rally and buy a car. By helping Romanda and her friends you’ll be directly supporting two important Mongolian charities – Children and Young People’s Protection and Development, and Christina Noble Children’s Foundation.

If you’re thinking that Romanda, Amanda and Suzie Q are not serious about this crazy adventure, you should know that  Romanda just came back from Vancity’s Terminal Avenue brach with a money order for 3 blondes and a beater‘s Mongolian visas!

Happy New Year: The Reality of a Brazilian Lost Between Two Countries

Happy New Year: The Reality of a Brazilian Lost Between Two Countries

Author’s Note: “Águas de Março” is this blog post’s official soundtrack. Please press play and enjoy!

It may sound wrong to you, but in my mind, the year only starts after my birthday! I grew up in Brazil with the idea that everything starts after Carnival, which usually happen 40 days before Easter. School, new projects, jobs, all serious things are kept (unofficially) on hold from Christmas to March. Coincidentally, March is also when the rainy season starts in Rio de Janeiro, bringing with it the end of the Summer. My birthday falls in the second week of March, so it always made sense to me that the year starts after my personal solar revolution.

But, what if you are an immigrant in a country where Carnival is only a warm and intriguing BBC TV segment? What if your internal clock doesn’t make sense to your Canadian family and coworkers? Well… I am still going through some adaptation, although 2010 was the first year that I completely forgot about Carnival and summer in Brazil . The Olympics and an overwhelming start to 2010 kept me busy enough during this first quarter.

I still like the idea that the year starts after March 11th though. 2010 could have started without a stressful identity theft episode (blog post to come) and a really exhausting trip to Brazil and back (another blog post). I am sorry that I am taking a little bit longer to catch up, but you won’t regret it if you stay tuned. Happy 2010!

Vancouver 2010: We Are a Nation!

IMGP0922

The Olympics are officially over. For 17 days, Canadians came together to celebrate the Olympic spirit and show to the world some patriotism. We were together on twitter, wrote enthusiastic blog posts about our Olympic experience, and discussed media and technology in conferences and pub gatherings around Vancouver. But, what’s next?

Today, the Canadian men’s hockey team gave us one of the most important gold medals of the Games. And that was our excuse to  high-five every single stranger that we saw on the streets. We are still celebrating our colours like there is no tomorrow, feeling patriotic, energized and strongly proud to be Canadian. However, we know that tomorrow morning our lives will go back to normal and there will be a need to cope with such unexpected patriotic energy. So, what are you going to do with your maple leafed heart?

I suggest that we transfer this new perspective to our involvement in our communities and in politics. The Olympics redirected the eyes of the whole world to Vancouver. We effectively publicized ourselves to an international audience, but like any product or service, we will need to deliver our promises soon.

Patriotism’s real meaning is to get involved in situations to attempt to find a solution. It means that you’ll vote even though you’re not obliged to, it means that you’ll take part in your city, your province, your country. Now that we have found ourselves as a nation, let’s act as one and make Canada the best place on Earth!

Go Canada Go!

In the past week, several videos have been produced or gained the spotlight for showcasing our beautiful British Columbia.  After 9 days of Winter Olympics, I came up with this small selection. Enjoy!

Video Credit: Government of B.C.

Thanks to internet, “Vancouver City” came to life. Serge Chubinsky-Orlov and Linda Ganzini had a song without a video; David and Dan Newcomb had a time-lapse video that they didn’t know what to do but decided to post on youtube. The rest is history…

Great time-lapse video of the Vectorial Elevation light-show. You can suggest a design to this collective art installation here.

Vancouver 2010: Stephen Colbert, Michael Bublé and Vancouverites

IMG_0070

This morning, a warm Vancouverite crowd welcomed the Colbert Report show to the 2010 Winter Olympics host city. By 7:00am, hundreds of people started to line up for the Colbernation stage at Creekside Park next to Science World. The live recording started after 10:30am, giving lots of time to the show’s stage manager to “train” Colbert’s audience and speak about his connection to our city.

If you missed the chance to see Michael Bublé and Stephen Colbert today, you’ll can come tomorrow after 9:15am and be part of the second day of the Colbert Report show in Vancouver. Don’t forget to dress warm!

To help to spread the word about this major event, Colbernation’s website advises fans to download the exclusive comemorative poster and post it all over Vancouver.

Vancouver 2010: Sochi 2014 Russian House

Science World has become a great Russian House. Thanks to my friend Veronica Rivas, Raul Pacheco and I had full access to the Russian Sochi 2014 House and the opportunity to mingle with Russians and people from all around the world.

The set up of the Sochi 2014 Russian House effectively brought a taste of Russian culture to Vancouver along with the spirit of  Sochi, the next host city of the Olympic Winter Games. Organized in different lounges, the house showcases Sochi 2014′s partners and sponsors.

The Russian virtual hosts were the high point for me. Even though the house hasn’t explored all the interactive possibilities that a virtual display could provide, it was well done and unexpected.

IMG_0003

Speaking of interactivity, the Sochi 2014 Russian House has several activities for the little ones. Of course, they are all related to a passion shared by both Russians and Canadians. Hockey.

IMG_0013

Raul was really impressed with the media centre. I found it the ideal place to work and keep up with all the Olympic events.

IMG_0004

Merchandise is already available at Bosco Sport. No line-ups if you’re thinking of supporting Team Russia during the 2010 Olympic games or want to get prepared for 2014.

IMG_0018

Sochi 2014 Russian House cultural program is outstanding. We’ve watched Dimithy Kalinin’s Palalaika show and it was mindblowing. Click here, for more information about upcoming concerts and shows.

The Sochi 2014 Russian House is open from 12:00pm – 5:00pm to the public and it’s free. The evening program is available to accredited guests only.
